Pomocanthus semicirculatus

This exotic pet is commonly called the Koran angelfish or semicirculatus. When called Koran, it describes the markings on the tail fin when in adult coloration. These markings resemble writing in the Koran Bible. When called semicirculatus, it describes the half or semi-circles found on the body when in juvenile coloration.
This popular aquarium favorite undergoes a fantastic color change as it grows into an adult. When young, about 1" (2.5 cm) they are marked with about 10 white semicircular bands on a deep blue body. As the fish grows larger, the circles open and a golden color develops in the mid body and facial area. When adult, all half circles have disappeared and it exhibits a magnificent yellowish anteriorly or golden posterior. In full adult coloration a bright blue color highlights most of the fishes body. About 16" (40 cm) is the maximum length for this species.
The Koran angel is collected from the Philippines, South China Sea, Okinawa, Melanesia, Red Sea, Indian Ocean and parts of the Indo-Australian Archipelago.
The Koran angel can live for years with the proper care. A good all around food to feed this angelfish is a simple mixture of fresh minced scallop, clam and prawn mixed with Tetra® Marin flake food that has been soaked in Marine Vita-Pep. This can be formed into thin sheets and frozen inside of ziplock® bags. Prior to feeding, a small piece is broken off and thawed. The Koran angel and most other marine fish relish and thrive with this healthy offering.
The Koran, like some other angelfish and surgeons/tangs can develop lateral line disease or exhibit color loss around the head when activated carbon is used in the home marine aquarium. Avoid continual use of activated carbon on all marine aquariums. Carbon is usually used to remove medications. Maintain high water quality. Use the best marine salts.
